No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
